Inspired by a special dinner I had in Puglia, Italy — specifically in Lecce: A place filled with romantic whimsy, where the great baroque architecture allows you to reminisce to times before you were even born, music in the street adds the soundtrack to your day, where birds fly, and people — young and old, tourists and locals — enjoy the cafes and the scenery, and every piece adds layers to the story. And then there’s the food…

While it’s best practice that you try different restaurants & places when traveling, we ended up breaking that cardinal rule here, eating at one restaurant 3 different times. A reflection of the incredible food, no doubt. To even the most sophisticated palates, such as my Italian (life and travel) partner, who grew up working in his uncle’s restaurant, there was no question about the magic in those pizzas. Those pizzas were better than any other I had eaten in Italy, or anywhere else for that matter; a huge call, I know.

So, after deciding to pay homage to Puglia through the lens of its delicious food, I painted this capricciosa pizza, along with taralli pugliesi, and a glass of wine. I learnt that taralli, an Italian wheat-based cracker, similar to a breadstick, originated in southern Italy and was regularly enjoyed in Puglia along with a glass of wine to dip it in. Stale bread dipped in wine — an Italian habit as old as time, from the post-war era. Somewhat frugal in its origins, cleverly resourceful for those who needed to be, but timeless nonetheless.
