Flickering lights - the pulse of the music wiring your brain - the room moves and spins as you delve into the music of your pleasure. There’s always something exciting about live music: the connection between the artists on stage and the crowd in which they control, the connection between you and the music lovers around you, and the undoubtable feeling that you’re a part of something bigger, if only for a moment.
The sparkling, colourful, rainbow lights - dancing on the ceiling and on friendly faces, and setting the mood for the room like it’s 1979.
The local music scene is an even more powerful one. You’re now definitely a part of something bigger - something where real music is pushing the limits to reach your soul, perhaps fought a little bit harder, but a lot of bits sweeter. With a disco ball hanging over my head, I am now convinced of my 1970’s roots, a strange deep connection I’m sure stems from a vague memory from a past life.
And as an artist, there's a comforting mystic in being able to create whatever peculiarity I please, no matter how small. I couldn't help but pay homage to two of my musical influences and 70s greats - a young Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham peering from the back of the crowd.
But the original inspiration for this painting didn't start there. These days I thank Newtown, the heart and soul of the artsy ballad of Sydney. In particular, I commend the annual King Street Crawl which introduced me to so many greats I may not have otherwise known about, most of which I’m sure I’m now subscribed to for life. This painting was based on a scene from our last stop at The King Street Crawl: The Trocadero Room - a.k.a The Troc - a place filled with glitz and grooves, and room for all of my 70’s dreams.
